In Christ – God with Us in the Storms of Life

Matthew 1:23. Look! “The virgin will conceive a child! “She’ll give birth to a son, “they will call Him Immanuel, which means God is with us.” In Jesus-God With Us.

Storms of national punishment and correction: Exodus 9:23–25

Storms of inner emotions of helplessness and hopelessness: Job 30:22-23 (ESV)

Storms of inner terror caused by sin of unbelief: Proverbs 1:27-31; Jeremiah 23:19

Storms of discipline caused by disobedience: Jonah 1:4,12

Storms of Faith Testing and revelation: Matthew 8:23ff; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22ff

Storms of God’s will to complete His purpose through us for others: Acts 27-28.

Mark 4:35–41 (CSB)On that day, when evening had come, he told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.” 36 So they left the crowd and took him along since he was in the boat. And other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 He was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. So they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher! Don’t you care that we’re going to die?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 Then he said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 And they were terrified, and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”

I. In Christ God Is With Us In Our Lives

Timothy 1:18–19 (ESV) This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith,

A. Your Life has a Captain in Jesus-God with us.

Hebrews 2:10 (NKJV) For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

B. In Jesus God with Us Your life has a purpose and a destination.

Jesus will bring you to your ultimate destination.

2 Timothy 1:12 “I am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day.”

John 14:1–3 (CSB) “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.

Hebrews 6:18–19 (ESV)so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul,…

37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped.

Life storms are sudden and unexpected.

Proverbs 27:1 (ESV) Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

  • Disobedience

  • Discipline

Psalm 83:15 “So pursue them with Your tempest, And frighten them with Your storm.”

Sometimes God is behind the storm – using it to drive us to Him for refuge.

  • The Enemy:

The word “rebuked” is the same word used when Jesus rebuked demons.

  • Devastatingly and Strongly

III. In Jesus God with Us we have One Greater than the Storms.

Psalm 89:9 (CSB) You rule the raging sea; when its waves surge, you still them.

Psalm 107:28–29 (CSB) Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.

1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon Him for He cares for you.”

Whatever the storm, Jesus is bigger and stronger.

Faith is taking God at His word.

Isaiah 43:2-3a (ESV) When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…
