The Presence, The Table, The Oil, and The Cup

Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

It’s not about what’s on the table but about the Presence of God in Christ through the Holy Spirit.

Jehovah-Shammah- “The Lord Who is There.”

Jehovah-Tsidkenu- “The Lord is our Righteousness.”

Jehovah-Shalom- “The Lord is our Peace.”

Jehovah-Jireh- the Shepherd who will always Provide!

Adonai- Lord & Master.

El-Shaddai- “The All- Sufficient One.”

1. The Table

God Sustains us in the presence of our enemies by giving us the strength we need.

John 6:35 (ESV) Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

Psalm 18:1 (ESV) I love you, O LORD, my strength.

Psalm 18:39 (ESV) For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me.

Psalm 28:7 (ESV) The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.

Psalm 46:1 (ESV) God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

1 Timothy 1:12a (ESV) I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord… .

2. The Oil

God sustains in the presence of our enemies by giving us, His children, fresh purpose.

The oil speaks of new purpose.

Psalm 133:1, 2 Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes!.

1 Samuel 16:13 And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward.

In the New Testament, all of God’s people are anointed with the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 92:10–11 But you have made me as strong as a wild ox. You have anointed me with fresh oil. 11 My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies; my ears have heard the defeat of my wicked opponents.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

3. The Cup

God sustains us by giving joy to us and in us His children.

John 15:11 “These things I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be full” .

Nehemiah 8:10 …Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the LORD is your strength!”

Ephesians 1:3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.

What did the table mean for Jesus?

Jesus is the meal. Jesus gives you strength by giving you Himself.

The heart of the Christian life is that Jesus gives you Himself. He is your strength.

What The Anointing Meant for Jesus

“She has done a beautiful thing…She has anointed my body beforehand for burial” (Mark 14: 6,8).

Jesus was anointed for death and for burial, so that you should be appointed to eternal life, (Acts 13:48).

He died so that you might live!

What did the cup mean for Jesus?

Jesus drank the cup of God’s wrath so that you and I may drink the cup of God’s blessing.
