Destroying the Weapons of Self-Destruction Through Christ and His
Word
Shame
You cannot be joyful and happy and feel ashamed at the same time.
Uncontrolled thoughts
In Christ You must learn how to control your thoughts.
Compulsions
Compulsions are those inner drives, inner desires, your lusts.
Fear
Hopelessness
Hopelessness keeps you from keeping on.
Bitterness
Bitterness is a cancer that will eat you alive.
Insecurity
Romans 7:24 “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this
body of death?”.
The answer is a Person—Jesus Christ and His Spirit inside you.
I must remind myself daily what Jesus did for me.
Romans 8:1-2 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are
in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives
life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”
If you belong to Christ, you are under no condemnation.
God does not stay angry with you when you sin, because the payment has
already been made. Jesus paid for every sin—past, present, and future.
1 John 1:9 “ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our
sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ”
I ask the Holy Spirit to give me better thoughts.
Romans 8:5-6 “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on
what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have
their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is
death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
You choose your mindset. The principle is replacement.
Whatever you focus on gets your attention.
I call to my mind that I have a new ability to say no and act on it.
Romans 8:9 “ You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the
Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ
does not belong to him.”
Galatians 5:16 “ But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the
desires of the flesh.”
You are no longer obligated to obey your old sinful nature
Romans 8:12 NLT “ Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no
obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. ”
I turn my thoughts to God whenever I’m afraid.
2 Timothy 1:7 “ for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and
self-control.”
Romans 8:15 “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that
you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your
adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’”
The more Spirit-controlled you are, the more self-controlled you
become.
I focus on the long term, not the short term.
Romans 8:17-18 “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God
and co-heirs with Christ… I consider that our present sufferings are not
worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”
As Christians, we think in light of eternity.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (NLT2) For our present troubles are small and won’t
last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them
and will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now;
rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see
now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”
I remind myself that God is good and in control.
The Holy Spirit is praying for you (Romans 8:26-27).
God works all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)
God did not spare His own Son—He will graciously give us all things
(Romans 8:32).
I trust that God will never stop loving me.
Romans 8:38-39 “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither
angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to
separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
