The Living, Transforming Power of the Bible

“‘Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks

the rock in pieces?’” (Jeremiah 23:29 ESV)

Your respect for God can be measured by your respect for the Bible. When

the Bible is open, God is speaking.

The Bible: A Sword with Two Edges (Hebrews 4:12–13)

The Roman sword had two edges. God uses it to wound us so that He

might heal us.

Hebrews 4:2 (NKJV) – The word did not profit them because it was not

mixed with faith.

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword,

piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and

discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart...” (Hebrews 4:12–13

ESV)

The Word of God is:

Living and Active – Not just words on a page. The Spirit makes it relevant

(and filled with life). “You have been born again, not of perishable seed but

of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God” (1 Peter 1:23

ESV) James 1:18 (NKJV) Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of

truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

The Word Cuts Us Open

Sharper (Greek: tomoteros – to cut). Language of surgery.

Piercing = “to go through.”

It penetrates both soul and spirit, exposing reality.

It discerns (sifts/analyzes) our thoughts and intentions.

We hide behind defense systems and rationalizations. Paul: “I would not

have known sin except through the law.” “I would not have known sin

except through the law. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the

law had not said, ‘You shall not covet’” (Romans 7:7 ESV).

The Word Lays Us Bare Hebrews 4:13 (NKJV) – All things are naked and

open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

We are on God’s surgical table. The Word performs a spiritual autopsy. We

compare ourselves to others, but we are answerable to God alone.

Is Christianity Evil and Atheism Moral?

Atheists like Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens claim Christianity is

immoral while atheism is moral. They lack an absolute moral standard.

Christianity has brought immense good: freedoms, protection of life,

women’s status, abolition of slavery, charity, etc.

The Bible gives an absolute moral foundation.

Mark Twain: It is the Bible’s power to convict us of personal sin that

troubles us.

Point 2: The Word Heals Us

“Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we

may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16

ESV).

“I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal” (Deuteronomy 32:39 ESV). “He

sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their

destruction” (Psalm 107:20 ESV). “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up

their wounds” (Psalm 147:3 ESV).

The more thorough our repentance, the greater the grace.

Point 3: Similarities Between the Bible and God (Psalm 19)

The Bible shares God’s own characteristics:

Perfection: “The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul” (Psalm 19:7)

Faithfulness: “The testimony of the Lord is sure...” (v. 7)

Righteousness: “The precepts of the Lord are right...” (v. 8)

Purity: “The commandment of the Lord is pure...” (v. 8)

Cleanness: “The fear of the Lord is clean...” (v. 9)

Truth: “The judgments of the Lord are true...” (v. 9)

They are more desirable than gold and sweeter than honey (v. 10).

The Path to Personal Transformation

Joshua 1:8 – Meditate on the Book of the Law day and night → prosperity

and good success.

Psalm 1:2–3 – Like a tree planted by streams of water that yields fruit and

does not wither.

Two Keys to Transformation:

Meditate – Mull over the text. Ask: What does this teach about God? What

does it command? What promise can I claim?

Memorize – “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin

against you.” (Psalm 119:11 ESV)

Open this Book daily. Let it cut, expose, and heal.
