The Road to Resurrection

THE ROAD TO RESURRECTION IS PAVED WITH PRAYER

(Luke 18:1–8)

MARCH 12

Luke 17:20 When is the kingdom of God coming?

Luke 17:21 ‘The kingdom of God is in the midst of you’

Luke 17:22 “Days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see.

Jesus tells us that our calling (17:22) is to suffer many things as has our Lord (17:25).

Jesus teaches about the kingdom and secularism (Luke 17:26–33).

The ‘doctrine’ Jesus highlights has to do with the preoccupation of the world (vv. 26–30).

In the last segment (Luke 17:34–37) Jesus warns about the kingdom and separation.

Luke 18:1–8 (ESV) And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4 For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’ ” 6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Jesus illustrates the situation of His people in this world (Luke 18:2–5).

Rom. 12:19, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will pay back, says the Lord’

Psalm 94:1–2 (ESV) O Lord, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! 2 Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve!

This widow in the parable represents the church of Jesus in this world. This church longs for one of the days of the Son of Man—and has not yet seen it (17:22).

Jesus assures His people of God’s intervention and relief (Luke 17:6–8a).

Jesus does call His people to perseverance in faith and prayer (Luke 18:1, 8b).

Matthew 24:12 ‘the love of many will grow cold.’
