Why Were You Born? Discovering God's Purpose for Your Life

Mark Twain once said there are two most important days in a person's life: the day you are born and the day you figure out why you were born. This profound statement captures a truth that many people spend their entire lives searching for - their purpose.

God Creates Everything with Purpose

God has never made anything without a purpose. Every rock, every leaf, every animal, every star in the universe has a particular reason for being where it is. Nothing in God's creation is random or accidental.

This truth extends to you and me. If your heart is beating right now and you're breathing, then God still has a reason for you being here. Even in the final moments of life, God can use someone to lead a family member to Christ or fulfill His purposes in ways we might never expect.

How Do You Discover Your Purpose?

You cannot find your life's purpose by looking within yourself, watching television programs, reading self-help books, or following popular culture's advice. Everyone who looks within themselves to find their reason for existence finds nothing but confusion.

The truth is simple: you can't tell what your purpose is because you didn't make yourself. Just like you would need to ask an inventor what their invention is for, or read their manual, you need to go to your Creator to understand your purpose.

Two Ways to Know Your Purpose

  • Talk to God through prayer - seeking His will for your life

  • Read His owner's manual - the Bible - to discover who God is and what His plans are for you

You Were Made By God and For God

According to Colossians 1:15-16, Christ is the visible image of the invisible God, and through Him, God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. Everything was created through Him and for Him - including you.

You were made by God and you were made for God. Until you understand this fundamental truth, nothing in life will truly make sense. You'll spend your entire life wondering about your purpose instead of living it out.

Why Didn't God Just Create Us in Heaven?

Some people wonder why, if we're meant for eternity with God, we weren't just born directly into heaven. The answer lies in our need for redemption. All have sinned and fallen short of God's glory, and in our sinful state, we could never stand in God's presence.

God so loved the world that He sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, so that whoever believes in Him might be saved. Through faith in Christ, we receive forgiveness and His righteousness becomes our righteousness.

What Is Our General Purpose?

Created for God's Glory

God created us primarily for His glory. How we live, think, speak, and act should point people to Him and give Him glory. This applies to every aspect of life - whether you have a simple job or lead a billion-dollar company, everything should revolve around bringing glory to God.

Created for God's Pleasure

God didn't create us because He needed us - He is completely satisfied within Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Rather, He created us because He wanted us. He takes pleasure in His people, just as parents take pleasure in watching their children.

According to Ephesians 1:4-5, even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes. He decided in advance to adopt us into His family through Jesus Christ because it gave Him great pleasure.

Learning to Love God Back

When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, He summarized the entire Bible in one sentence: "Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might, with all your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself."

In God's kingdom, life is about love. The most important thing we can know is that God loves us, and the most important thing we can do is love Him back. This love is expressed through worship - not just singing songs, but living our entire lives as an act of loving God back.

The Warning Light of Worry

God has built a warning system into our lives to alert us when we're not connected to Him as we should be - it's called worry. When we worry, we're acting like God doesn't exist, like everything depends on us rather than trusting our heavenly Father who has promised to supply all our needs.

Created to Be Part of God's Family

God's unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into His own family through Jesus Christ. He never meant for us to go through life alone. From the very beginning, He said, "It is not good for man to be alone."

Your spiritual family - those who are in Christ - will outlast your physical family. While physical families can be separated by divorce, death, or distance, the family of God lasts forever.

The Church as Family

The church is not primarily an organization, institution, or business - it's God's family. When we trust in Christ, we become children of God, which makes us brothers and sisters in Christ.

The church serves as the support and foundation of truth. Just as a building needs a foundation to stand, we need the support of God's family to make it through life's tough times. You cannot fulfill God's purposes without being connected to other believers.

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to live out these fundamental purposes God has for your life. Start each morning by saying, "God, thank you for the gift of this day. I want to know you more and love you more than I've ever loved you before. Help me to know you a little bit better today and to love you a little bit better than I did yesterday."

Don't waste your life pursuing achievements, fame, or wealth while neglecting to know God better. At the end of each day, ask yourself: Do I know God a little bit better today? Do I love Him a little bit more? Have I given Him glory through my words and actions?

Questions for Reflection:

  • Am I living my life in a way that points people to God and gives Him glory?

  • Do I truly know God through prayer and His Word, or do I know more about entertainment, sports, or other distractions?

  • Am I connected to God's family - the church - or am I trying to live the Christian life alone?

  • When worry comes, do I remember that it's a warning light telling me I'm not trusting God as I should?

  • If I died today, would people be able to see that Jesus was my Lord and Savior by the way I lived?
