WHO FIXED THE ROOF?
THROUGH THE ROOF KICK OFF
Mark 2:1–12 (NLT) When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. 2 Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them, 3 four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. 4 They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. 5 Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.” 6 But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there thought to themselves, 7 “What is he saying? This is blasphemy! Only God can forgive sins!” 8 Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts? 9 Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’? 10 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, 11 “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” 12 And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers. They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!”
When Jesus saw their faith, he healed their friend.
Jesus saw their Love.
John 13:34 “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.”
Jesus saw their dream, a faith fueled dream.
If we are going to accomplish the things that need to be accomplished in this life then we will first have to a faith-fueled dream of the way they could be.
Ephesians 3:20-21 “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
Jesus Saw Their Determination.
Jesus Saw Their Cooperation.
If we are to accomplish everything that God wants for this Church it will only be through the unity of the body.
John 17:23 “I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.”
“Who fixed the hole in the roof?”
The Curious On Lookers Didn’t Do It.
These people weren’t involved in the work; they were only there to see what was going to happen.
The Critics Didn’t Do It.
These people weren’t nearly as interested in building up the Kingdom as they were blowing it up.
The Consumers wouldn’t.
These are the folks who want the thrill without paying the bill.
The Attenders wouldn’t.
John 6:24-26 “So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for him. 25 They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.”
Luke 19:2-3 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature.
It takes special people to have the love, the dream, the commitment and the cooperation to knock holes in the roof.
But we also need people with selfless love and quiet determination who will fix the roof as well.
Stephen R. Covey: “Without involvement, there is no commitment. Mark it down, asterisk it, circle it, underline it. No involvement, no commitment.”
And so if we want to show our commitment, we do so by getting involved.
