MOVING FROM ORDINARY TO EXTRAORDINARY: GOD IS FOR US!
The last few verses of Romans 8 form the pinnacle of the book.
These five rhetorical questions give the clearest description in the New
Testament of what it means to live by grace.
Grace can be summarized in one sentence: God is for us.
Romans 8:31–39 “What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If
God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but
gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give
us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has
chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one.
Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right
hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the
love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or
nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: ‘For your sake we face death
all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these
things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am
convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the
present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor
anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God
that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
I. Grace Means I Can Always Count on God’s Power
Romans 8:31“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
One plus God equals a majority.
1 John 4:4 “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them,
because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
Philippians 4:13 “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
1 John 5:18 “We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin;
the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot
harm them.”
II. Grace Means I Can Always Count on God’s Provision
Romans 8:32 “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us
all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”
Psalm 37:4 “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of
your heart.”
Psalm 84:11“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor
and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is
blameless.”
Philippians 4:19 “And my God will meet all your needs according to the
riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
III. Grace Means I Can Always Count on God’s Protection
Romans 8:33 “Who will bring any charge against those whom God has
chosen? It is God who justifies.”
Heaven’s courtroom: God is the Judge, Satan is the prosecuting attorney,
Jesus is the attorney for the defense.
Revelation 12:10 “Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: ‘Now have come
the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority
of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses
them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.’”
1 John 2:1 “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But
if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the
Righteous One.”
Believers are unimpeachable (a legal term meaning no charge can stick).
IV. Grace Means I Can Always Count on God’s Pardon
Romans 8:34 “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus
who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of
God and is also interceding for us.”
Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in
Christ Jesus.”
1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the
unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made
alive in the Spirit.”
John 3:18 “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does
not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the
name of God’s one and only Son.”
Jesus was condemned so that you might live without condemnation.
He is seated at the right hand of God because His work is finished.
He is continually interceding (praying) for us.
V. Grace Means I Can Always Count on God’s Presence
Romans 8:35–39 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? … No, in all
these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
John 16:33 “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have
overcome the world.”
Psalm 44:22 “Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are
considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”
John 10:27–28 “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow
me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch
them out of my hand.”
You may lose fellowship, but you can never lose the relationship.
Five Reasons Believers Never Need to Worry
I never need to worry about opposition — God is for me.
I never need to worry about any situation — God will provide.
I never need to worry about accusation — God justifies and defends me.
I never need to worry about condemnation — Jesus paid it all and
intercedes for me.
I never need to worry about separation — nothing can snatch me from His
hand.
